Heifer International aims to engage youth in agriculture through the development of pro-poor, wealth-creating value chains in low income countries. Our values-based, holistic, community development model recognizes that all community members, including young women and men, play a pivotal role in achieving our mission to end poverty and hunger, while caring for the Earth.

In developing countries in Asia and Africa, young people (15-24 years) are expected to account for 14 percent of a projected global population of 9 billion by 2050; most will be rural youth. The UN International Labour Organization states that, globally, there were 74.2 million unemployed young people in 2014, an increase of 3.8 million since 2007. These numbers are expected to rise. While the agriculture sector badly needs new farmers to feed a growing population, for young people, agriculture is often seen as outdated, unprofitable, backbreaking work without quick returns.

The question is clear and urgent: how can we sustainably increase the productivity of the agricultural sector - including dairy and other value chains - and improve the livelihoods of youth?

For over 70 years, Heifer International has worked with smallholder farmers to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Since 2012, Heifer has dramatically expanded the scope, scale and impact of its work to increase the income, food security and productivity of smallholder farmers who lack resources and training. Heifer’s approach - working with communities to develop pro-poor, wealth creating value chains - is a proven method to accelerate economic growth in rural communities and regions across the developing world. By creating partnerships, strengthening capacity, and linking smallholder farmer groups to market-driven supply chains, Heifer helps communities transform economically and socially.

Heifer’s unique model combines Values-Based, Holistic Community Development training (VBHCD) with agriculture and livestock inputs. Heifer’s distinctive emphasis on building social capital among participants and community members - including the practice of requiring participants to Pass On the Gift® of knowledge and livestock to others - ensures that projects are sustainable, scalable and replicable.
